About the Event

Co-organised by Community Chest and Marina Bay Sands, the Community Chest Vertical Marathon 2021 is a platform that aims to virtually unite people from all walks of life to scale greater heights while building a community that shares and a nation that cares. All proceeds and donations raised will go towards over 100 social service agencies and more than 200 critical programmes supported by Community Chest!

In line with the year’s theme, “Together We Soar”, and to mark Community Chest’s 38th anniversary, this virtual event hopes to rally the community to achieve a collective 38,000m elevation over the campaign period.

Using the Strava app or other preferred app to track one’s elevation, participants can embark on a virtual expedition to conquer these five peaks virtually in support of Community Chest’s five supported causes:
  • Singapore’s Bukit Timah Hill - 163m
  • South Korea’s Mount Yongmasan - 348m
  • Japan’s Mount Takao - 599m
  • Hong Kong’s Lantau Peak - 934m
  • Indonesia’s Mount Batur - 1,717m

Registration starts on 5 September and ends on 3 October 2021. There will be a longer period for participants to clock their elevation activity, and the clock-in period ends on 31 October 2021.

For more information, please visit Community Chest’s website here.

Thank you for the enthusiasm and support towards Community Chest Vertical Marathon! While we encourage everyone’s participation to raise funds for the social service users, this is not recommended as each Strava account has its own unique ID, so Strava app users will not be able to link the same Strava account to two different profiles.

Taking part in the challenge

There will be a link to log in with the unique password and you can kickstart the challenge!
Community Chest Vertical Marathon 2021 is about embarking on the philanthropic journey to raise awareness on our causes, to rise above challenges and scale to new heights. It is not a competition, but a collective activity to reach the community goal of 38,000m in elevation to support more than 100 social service agencies and over 200 critical programmes supported by Community Chest.

Strava is the recommended app to track your elevation, and you can download the app via this link. You can also use other third-party GPS-enabled apps or devices.

Kindly note that all GPS-enabled apps and devices, including Strava, work best outdoors. There may be a reduction of elevation distance (in metres) if GPS signal is not strong within indoor spaces.

For Strava app users, please follow these steps to record your elevation activity carried out on foot:
  1. Click on “Record” button, which can be found on the app’s bottom menu bar, and you will be directed to the Record page.
  2. Click on the second left button on the bottom bar to choose a sport from the dropdown menu. Select “Hike”, and you will be directed back to the “Record” page.
  3. Click on the “START” button, and you are ready to take on the first peak!

Once you have completed your activity on Strava, please remember to sync your elevation details to your account under “My Activity-Strava” tab on this website.

For non-Strava app users, please upload a screenshot from your app that captures both elevation and time to your account under “My Activity-Manual Submission” tab.

The event organiser reserves the rights to reject any questionable submissions without any notification in order to maintain fairness for all participants and teams.

Yes, the Strava app is completely free to download and use. Monthly subscription fees for Strava is not required as the free version is able to track elevation with activity recording.

For more information on Strava’s free membership, you can visit their support page here.

You can use your preferred app to track elevation and upload the elevation details on “My Activity-Manual Submission” page. Please ensure that elevation can be tracked with your preferred app, and that the GPS function is working within the tracking app before you start the activity.

For non-Strava app users, a screenshot of the activity must be uploaded for verification, and you will need to enter the date of activity and elevation (in metres) in the required fields for submission.

You can download the User Guide here on the steps to submit your activity details.

You may submit your results by logging in to your account and upload your screenshots under “My Activity” tab. Take note that you can only upload one screenshot at a time. Please ensure that the screenshot captures both elevation (in metres) and date of activity.

You can refer to the User Guide here on the steps to submit your activity details.

Yes, you can make multiple submissions within a day so long as each submission is unique and achieved within the clock-in period from 5 September to 31 October 2021.

Participants will have to keep in mind the following:
  1. Remember to use an app or GPS-enabled device that can track your elevation. Please ensure that the GPS function is working within the app or device before you start the activity.
  2. Take a screenshot of your elevation result each time you complete the activity as you are required to upload a photo proof of your elevation clocked.
  3. Ensure that all results are submitted before 31 October 2021, 2359hrs for us to capture the data.
You can split up the climb of each peak in multiple sessions.

You can take part in the challenge at any place of your choice so long you are able to track the elevation, date, and a good GPS signal. A few places that you can best enjoy the challenge and clock your elevation would be hiking trails such as Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Fort Canning Park, and The Southern Ridges.

Always practice safe distancing while taking part in the whole duration of this challenge. Be socially responsible. Learn more here.
